Recent Project - Kite Festival
Kite Making Workshop
Traditionally, Indian kite competitions take place at large festivals when kites are flown from rooftops. People make beautiful and colourful kites in a wide range of designs. The kites are reinforced with fine bamboo sticks and some people coat their kite strings with fine ground flour and glass - this helps them to cut the strings of opponents kites, releasing them to fly away! The last kite flying is the winner.
People learned how to make (minus the glass!) and fly kites with a specialist kite maker. Sessions took place in Nottingham, Leicester and Derby, and some sessions were open for anyone to attend (free of cost). The top three best designed kites in each City won a cash prize of £25, £15 or £10, as did the three kites winning in the kite flying competition.
