Equipment Legacy

East Midlands Development Agency (emda) commissioned Under Scan from artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer in 2005. The artwork was installed in outdoor public spaces in each of Derby, Leicester, Lincoln, Northampton and Nottingham between November 2005 and March 2006. The expectation is that Under Scan may be presented elsewhere in the world during the period 2006-8.

The installation involved significant investment in capital equipment which is now wholly owned by emda. The equipment comprises an extremely powerful (110,000 lumens) PANI projector and fourteen DLI video projectors (with robotic base) and accompanying mini mac computers. The equipment was purchased to be suitable for outdoor use.

This equipment will need to be available to enable Under Scan to be shown in other locations around the world However, there is also an opportunity for Local Authorities, regional practitioners, arts organisations and arts festivals in the East Midlands to use this equipment to create and deliver new contemporary artwork.

As part of the Under Scan project Rafael Lozano-Hemmer engaged with twenty regional artists and practitioners across the region through a programme of workshops, master classes, shadowing and mentoring. The feedback and ideas generated from and by this work has informed the planning of an appropriate means to release the equipment to generate the development of other new work in the region.
