Under Scan is the eleventh in the series of ‘Relational Architecture’ installations that Mexican-Canadian artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer has designed for cities in Europe, Asia and America over the past ten years.

Using robotics, real-time computer graphics, film projections, positional sound, internet links, cell phone interfaces, video and ultrasonic sensors, LED screens, and other devices, his installations aim to reconnect the public with their urban environment.

His previous work has been commissioned for events such as the Millennium Celebrations in Mexico City (1999), the Cultural Capital of Europe in Rotterdam (2001), the United Nations’ World Summit of Cities in Lyon (2003), the opening of the Yamaguchi Centre for Art and Media in Japan (2003) and the Expansion of the European Union in Dublin (2004).

Lozano-Hemmer has won several awards, including a Rockefeller Fellowship in the US, a Bauhaus Award in Germany, a Golden Nica in Austria, a Trophée des Lumières in France and two BAFTAs for Interactive Art in the UK.
